About 5 years ago, I was introduced to the comic Y: The Last Man (Y:TLM) by Bryan K. Vaughn. And though I was about 6 years late to the (dystopic) party, it easily became one of my favourite comics and ranks up there with masterpieces such as Sandman, Lucifer, Preacher and Fables.
Out of the aforementioned titles, Lucifer and Preacher have already been adapted for TV while rumours about movies or TV series for Sandman and Fables have been swirling around the grapevine.
So colour me unsurprised when I read that Y:TLM was actually getting a live-action adaptation on FX.
In summary, Y:TLM is set in post-apocalyptic world where all male mammals have died except for a young amateur escape artist, Yorick Brown, and his pet Capuchin monkey, Ampersand. With mankind at the brink of extinction, Yorick truly becomes a VERY important person as scientists require him to discover why he is the only man alive.
If that doesn’t sound like it will make for a good TV series, I don’t know what will. According to the showrunners of the adaptation, Michael Green (American Gods, Blade Runner 2049, Logan) and Aïda Mashaka Croal (Luke Cage, Turn) said that the plot will remain as true to the book as possible.
FX’s formal description of the series reads: “Y traverses the post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event has decimated every male mammal save for one lone human. The new world order of women will explore gender, race, class and survival.”
As of now, the confirmed cast includes Barry Keoghan (Dunkirk), as the titular Yorick Brown. Academy-award nominee Diane Lane (Man of Steel, Unfaithful) stars as Senator Jennifer Brown, who is Yorick’s mother and a major political force before and after the plague. Imogen Poots (Cracks, Need for Speed) plays Yorick’s sister Hero.
The release of Y:TLM in live-action glory (and gory) is exciting news. Adaptations of comics and graphic novels have had better success compared to feature-length movie adaptations – Preacher and The Walking Dead are just some very fine examples. I hope Y:TLM gets added to that list.
